What you need to know about Financial Aid...​

  1. More than $185 billion in aid is available! (federal government, state governments, universities, private organizations)

  2. To qualify for the majority of types of aid you must fill out the FAFSA www.fafsa.gov (opens October 1st of your senior year)

  3. The FAFSA gives you access to: grants, scholarships, work-study jobs, and loans 

  4. Once you have completed the FAFSA, you should then apply to in house financial aid (at the colleges you are applying to) and private scholarships (see below).

  • OppU Achievers Scholarshipawards $2,500 scholarships 4 times per year

    • Essay Topic: In 500 words or fewer, please tell us why you’re an achiever. How have you created opportunity for yourself? How have you created opportunity for others? Did you start a small business? Are you the founder of a community program? How did you overcome the odds and make your dreams—or the dreams of others—come true? Please include links to any relevant material that demonstrates your accomplishments.

    • Opens October 1st ​

    • Make sure to create an FSA ID and Password before filling out the FAFSAA; this will save you a step!

  • JUNIORS - Questbridge College Prep Scholars Program

    • ​to qualify you must be a current junior, have an unweighted GPA 3.5 or above in rigorous courses, family earns less than 65,000 annually (typical family of 4). 

    • application opens in February of Junior Year

Taking a Gap Year and It's Advantages

A few tips from your counselor...
  • Universities want to see that you are not only a great academic student, but also a well-rounded person with a specific focus on how you will make a positive change in the world. 

  • Look into summer programs and/or research opportunites offered at colleges/universities you are interested in.

  • Go visit the college/university... preferably more than once if it is one of your top picks
